EUROMED pygeum lipidic extract is a standardized herbal extract of Pygeum africanum Hook bark, an evergreen tree growing in southern Africa. Due to the significant increase of the annual harvest in the last decade trade in its bark has been added to Appendix II of the Convention Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Meanwhile a sustainable cultivation and harvest of the bark has been introduced in Cameroon.
Pygeum africanum contains several groups of substances:
√ Phytosterols: ß-sistosterol, ß-sistosteryl glucoside and ß-sitosterone
√ Saturated an unsaturated fatty acids (C12-C22)
√ Pentacyclic triterpenoids: ursolic acid, 2ß-hydroxyurosilc acid, oleanolic acid, crataegolic acid and friedelin
√ Alcohols: n-tetracosanol, n-docosanol
√ Carbohydrates: tricontane (C30 H62) nonacosane (C29 H60)
Lipidic extracts of pigeon are used in the treatment of prostatic diseases especially being prostatic hypertrophy (international stage I-II, stages II-III according to Vahlensick), for the stabilisation of the urodynamic of the patient.
The therapy with pygeum results in relief of symptoms, such as pollakisuria (frequent urination), nocturne (frequent nocturnal urination) and urinary urgency. Residual urine is reduced and urinary outflow is improved.
Contraindications, interactions and side-effects
Pigeum lipidict is generally well tolerated. Side-effect are rare when the standardised extract is taken. In excepcional cases gastric complaints may occur. There are no known contraindications to the long-term use of pyfeum extract. There are no known interactions with drugs usually prescribed.
Pigeum lipidicextract is notable for its particularly high level of clinical safety. Particular emphasis should be put on the absence of any signifcant sir-effect in most of controlled studies performed.
